Norton Overview Norton Reviews Norton Ratings Norton Pros and Cons Norton Conclusion Kaspersky Website

Ask most average consumers about Internet security, and chances are they’ve heard of Norton Security, previously called Norton Antivirus, Norton 360, or Norton Internet Security. The company has been around for more than 30 years, gathering data on digital threats from over 150 countries. It’s this data that helps them create some of the most stable Internet security software on the market.

With 43 million clients worldwide, Norton doesn’t have the same kind of reach as, say, Kaspersky; but they have been working with the top computer safety experts since the very beginning of the personal computer. As technology has changed, and the method of attack as changed, so has Norton. Their Virus Protection Promise is a money-back guarantee similar to many other companies’ guarantees, but offers extra backing of their erasure tools included in their threat detection software. If your computer isn’t totally virus-free after using Norton, they’ll refund your money.

REVIEW

Without a doubt, if you are a typical computer user – savvy enough to use the Internet, but not really versed in the world of coding or advanced trouble shooting – Norton Antivirus is probably a good option for you. The user interface is one of the simplest in the industry, with a seamless installation and large, easy-to-read icons for each of the software’s main features.

The Norton Security software now combines security features, identity protection features, performance enhancement features, and monitoring features, all on one screen. Clicking on any of the four icons takes you to the settings and information for each set of features, so it’s easy to focus on just what you need at the time.

In addition to basic anti-virus, anti-phishing, and anti-Trojan firewalls, Norton offers top quality spam filtering for email, password management software, and several tools that help you keep your computer running at optimal performance. This includes things like file cleanup and startup manager. When you first choose the Performance tools from the user interface, you’ll be able to see when your computer was last optimized, so you can gauge how much of a difference the tools make after just a few uses.

While Norton performs well on Windows devices, Mac devices will find mostly a stripped-down version of the software While it’s still a great basic option, many of the performance enhancement tools are missing from this version. There is also no password manager, and no cloud-based storage for Mac users.

PROS:
  • Easy to use
  • All-in-one software with everything available from a single screen
  • Decades of experience behind the development team
  • Lack of tiered payment options means entry-level users get all the features of the more expensive options from competitors

CONS:
      • Mac users don’t have as many features to choose from
      • Entry level software is not as affordable as comparable Internet security suites

CONCLUSION

If you’re running a Windows PC, and want the easiest plug-and-play security software you can get, Norton is probably the best option on the market. While it’s not the most affordable, you can be sure that you’ll get all the best features even at the entry level. Norton has been around long enough that the developers have their work down to an art, and it’s hard to find any software that works better.

Mac users may be better off finding something that was developed specifically for Apple, especially if you want a comprehensive performance enhancement software. If you just want basic security in place while you browse, Norton is a good option, but there are more affordable options that offer Mac users more features, and accomplish the same thing.

I’ve used Norton products for years for multiple computers and am a satisfied customer. The older security suites used to impact performance of my machines but more recent versions (360) seems to be less of a drain on resources. I also run Malware Bytes as backup occasionally but seldom does that find any issues that Norton had not already addressed.

+ PROS: They seem to stay very current on the most recent threats.
    - CONS: Seems a bit intrusive sometimes. Would prefer some features like safe site monitoring be disabled by default.
